The Credit Card Trap You Need to Avoid

One important rule to keep your credit score healthy is to use only a small percentage of the total credit available to you. I recommend keeping your credit utilization to about 10% or less of your total credit limit. This is a crucial tip that many overlook yet has a significant impact on your credit health.

Credit card companies often engage in a practice that can be quite predatory. They send out pre-qualified offers—these tempting invitations to sign up for new cards with set limits. For example, you might receive a pre-approved Capital One card offer with a $2,000 limit. The problem is these companies often predict that many recipients will max out or nearly max out their credit limits, say $1,900 or $2,000 on a $2,000 card.

Why is this predatory? Well, when you use a large portion of your credit, high interest quickly accumulates, and it becomes tough to pay off the debt. This situation often leads to maxing out your credit, which then damages your credit score. Missing payments is a common consequence, resulting in a downward spiral. Some people even get to the point where they avoid looking at their statements because they already know they cannot pay.

To protect yourself, focus on two fundamental behaviors to build good credit: first, keep your spending well below your credit limit—around 10% or less. Second, always make your payments on time. These two actions are the biggest factors impacting your credit score and can help you avoid getting trapped in debt and poor credit due to deceptive credit card strategies.
